1935 Canadian General Electric A87Y Console Radio

Customer brought this console to me to try and restore. The cabinet was already in great shape but the rest, not so great:

  • The speaker, output transformer and its baffle were completely missing
  • The original grill cloth was tacked to a piece of bad plywood
  • Chassis was extremely dusty; Many old spider webs present
  • Tone control shaft was pulled completely out of its housing
  • Magic eye tube missing all mounting hardware
  • Tuning mechanism almost completely siezed
  • 4 tubes missing; Out of the remaining 5 tubes only one was good
  • Power switch was badly damaged
  • Volume control was internally damaged

This 24 hour restoration consisted of the following, besides the usual re-capping (I re-stuffed all of the existing paper caps) and replacement of bad resistors:
-For the speaker, a new piece of plywood was purchased and cut to fit a 10″ speaker. The plywood was stained on the inside to blend in with the rest of the interior of the cabinet. I luckily had in stock a perfect 10″ electrodynamic speaker and a proper output transformer to mate with the 6F6G audio output tube. I was able to re-use the original grill cloth and glued to the new baffle.
-The tone control was replaced-had to shorten and mill a new slot into the shaft
-As the volume control was a bit specialized, decided to open it up to see if it could be repaired. As seen in the photos below, I found the phenolic wafer to be cracked. I was able to force it back together, then applied epoxy. This worked out perfectly.
-the damaged rotary power switch was replaced. I had a perfectly sized one in salvage stock.
-New mounting hardware for the magic eye tube was constructed from scratch. Luckily the outer escutcheon was still present.
-the tuning mechanism was cleaned with solvents to un-seize, then re-lubricated
Finally, I installed, at the customer’s request, a Bluetooth receiver (seen on the left side of the chassis front view). This cannot be seen from the rear, in keeping with the overall vintage look. The power supply for the Bluetooth was discreetly mounted under the chassis.
