I am truly proud of this project. As seen in the before photos, this was a very ugly looking radio, inside and out. The chassis was badly corroded and full of “grunge”. After 36+ hours of work, it became a most beautiful 1930’s Deco piece.
To clean up the chassis properly, I removed everything from the top, including the IF transformers and the main tuning assembly. The tuning assembly, being full of nooks and crannies, was given a one hour warm, soapy bath in the ultrasonic cleaner. This did wonders to get at most of the dirt and grime. Still, it took another hour or so of manually cleaning and then lubricating the unit, and un-seizing all of the adjustable pushbuttons.
I was happy that the speaker was actually in decent operating condition, and, as well, the power transformer was tested good.
I was amazed at the beautiful wood grain under all of that terrible paint on the cabinet, but I expected to see that, after viewing some other specimens of this model on the internet. The cabinet did need some gluing of corners and replacement of some missing veneer.
The original dial pointer was long gone, but I had one “in stock” which was a perfect fit without need of any modification.
The final result is a beautiful period radio, with excellent sensitivity on both the broadcast and short wave bands.
