Here is a radio one does not see every day. Portable designed for both Marine and home use. Receives standard broadcast band, and a narrow long-wave band from 200 to 400 kHz for beacon reception, for direction finding. Operates on AC, DC from onboard ship, and internal batteries. The front cover doubles as the direction finding antenna, and when pointing to the distant beacon, shows the direction of the signal via the compass.
As found, cabinet had a few scuffs and leather damage. The chassis and other metal parts were covered in the common green corrosion, but this cleaned up nicely. Some tubes were placed in incorrect positions.
Most of the tubes tested very weak. While re-capping, I always check resistors as well. Every “dog-bone” style resistor was very much out of tolerance, some by as much as 50%. All had to be replaced.
Once this was done, radio came to life and alignment was then completed easily.
Cabinet cleanup consisted of replacing rusty screws, gluing peeling sections of leatherette, and installing new rubber feet. Finally, applied Turtle leather conditioner to all surfaces.
