Here is a (Canadian) General Electric Model C600, made in 1948. Stylish 6-tube table radio in a brown bakelite cabinet. This came to me with the usual incorrect or missing mounting screws for the chassis and back cover, and obvious previously poorly executed repairs.
The cabinet had some hairline cracks which were repaired with Crazy Glue. I decided to “re-stuff” all of the original paper capacitors with new polyester types to maintain the vintage look under the chassis.
The volume control, which was not original, was overloaded with oil, likely from a previous serviceman or owner over-lubricating it. The power switch was completely seized as a result. After soaking the control in acetone for a few minutes, everything loosened up, and the power switch operated properly. A partial short in the tuning capacitor caused loss of reception at the low end of the frequency range. This was cleared.
A paper orange-coloured pad situated under the dial to give it some “character” was discoloured and burned due to the proximity of the dial lamp. A new orange printed sheet of thin bristol board was created and glued in place of the old one. The effect can be seen in the first photo with the radio powered up. New labels were also printed up for the back cover and the bottom of the cabinet.
Total restoration time: 10 3/4 hours.
