This little “economy class” table top radio was made in 1939. It’s a 4-tube TRF circuit, plus ballast tube.
This project was a bit messy, as there was plenty of evidence of mouse and insect activity. The speaker cone was chewed up. The acrylic dial cover was all but gone. Chassis had some rust and a large amount of dirt and grime. The second RF coil can be seen just hanging by its leads.
After unsuccessfully attempting to repair the cone, I replaced the speaker with a good permanent magnet type, modifying the power supply to adjust for lack of the field coil.
The bulk of the cleanup and restoration work took a much larger amount of time (26 hours total) than normally warranted for a radio of this type. One of those “labors of love”.

The one odd issue I dealt with was when adjusting the antenna trimmer capacitor, the sound level abruptly changed. This was one of those intermittent problems. Finally traced it to a poor ground connection of this trimmer capacitor. The capacitor is mounted with rivets, and apparently a poor connection developed at the rivet. The solution was to simply apply solder too the rivet where it contacts the tuning capacitor frame, as seen in the photos attached.

Once all work was completed, the radio looked good, and worked better than expected when a long wire antenna was connected to it.
