Here is a Viking (House brand for electrical products sold by the national department store Eaton’s in Canada) basic 78 RPM phonograph.
Made for Eaton’s by the Dominion Electrohome Company in Kitchener.
This phono was given to me by a friend back in 1969 and it sat on the shelf until I finally got to it in 2023!
Overall this was physically in good condition. The original Rochelle Salt cartridge actually was in good working condition which is a rarity as the element is usually found in a badly deteriorated, crumbling state. I had a spare needle screw in stock to install where it was missing.
The turntable flocking was completely gone. Using paint remover, I easily got everything off to bare metal. I then sprayed with primer and then brown paint. A new felt record platter was cut to size and placed on top.
The idler wheel had a bad flat spot, but I was able to smooth and level it out with fine sandpaper. Interior metal parts had the green corrosion which was cleaned up.
The badly crowded and messy under chassis was re-capped (I re-stuffed one of them) and cleaned up.
The tone-arm lacked a counter balance spring. I adapted an appropriate spring from stock to fit. Needed to drill a small hole at rear of the pivot assembly as seen.
The motor and idler wheel assembly were dismantled, cleaned, lubricated and re-assembled. A strong, good quality motor was used in this economy player.
