1939 Clinton 444 Miniature TRF

1939 Clinton 444 TRF Miniature Radio

I’ve had this radio sitting on my shelves since the 1970’s, and finally got around to working on it in early 2014. As received it had no identifying markings. It was a difficult one to identify for sure, as there were many radios built very similar to this, mainly in the Chicago radio plants of the 1930’s-1940’s. After much searching (thank you internet) I was able to ascertain with about 90% accuracy that this is a Clinton Model 444.
This an economy 4-Tube TRF receiver, probably marketed by a major department store of the day.
As can be seen, this is a very compact radio, with a very crowded under-chassis. With newer components, the under-chassis became much less crowded.
This was a 30 hour restoration. There was much evidence of poor repairs made in the past.
It was also a more difficult restoration due to the fact that no exact schematic was available. There were many similar ones, so I had to wing it somewhat.
The “curtain burner” resistance line cord was badly frayed. This was replaced by a series resistor and diode, seen mounted under the chassis. The resistor was selected to obtain the proper voltage to the filament string.
The metal cabinet was stripped of the old improper flat black paint, and re-painted with a more original cream coloured enamel.
