Victorian 400 Reel Tape Recorder

Make: Victorian
Model: 400
Year: ca 1963
Description: Stereo Reel-To-Reel Tape Recorder
Origin: United States
Date of Restoration: May, 2025

This fairly unusual tape recorder required repairs and maintenance, rather than a full blown restoration. Unusual because this make and model are not often found, and, as well, this is a stereo recorder with only one VU meter. The meter is manually switched to read either left or right channels via front panel control.
The main drive belt was badly stretched and brittle, and quickly broke when I tried to remove it. Had a suitable (and better) new belt in stock to replace it. All of the rubber rollers seen with the cover off required revitalization and lubrication of the shafts. All other mechanical parts were cleaned up of old grease, and fresh lubrication applied.
Tape heads and guides were loaded with tape oxide-this was fully cleaned up.
The start-stop-play switch was electrically very noisy, as well as the volume controls. These were all cleaned up with De-Ox-It for quiet operation. Mute switch needed to be adjusted for proper operation.
Two tubes needed replacement, both 12AT7 preamplifiers for left and right channels were very weak. Once these were replaced, powered up.
The left channel began howling. The tube I used happened to be highly microphonic even though it was new-old-stock. Tried 3 different tubes until I found one which was quiet. This is a very high gain amplification stage, so prone to noise if the tube is not rigid enough internally.
